BOHEMIA
- French Boheme, Latin Boiohaemum = home of the Boii, a pre-1st c. AD Celtic
tribe; snglr. Boius [= either cow or warrior* + haimaz = home (Proto-Germanic) - making
the Boii either the herding people or the warrior people.
Once a Central European Kingdom of Bohemia in the 15th c. (long after the Boii had been
driven out by Germanic tribes) the term later came to refer to the general region of the
Czech Republic, and in the 19th c. Bohemian took on a 2nd connotation of a community of
artists & gypsies in reference to the society that had developed in the region of Bohemia.
