BOHEMIA

French Boheme, Latin Boiohaemum = home of the Boii, a pre-1st c. AD Celtic

      tribe; snglr. Boius [= either cow or warrior* + haimaz home (Proto-Germanic) - making

      the Boii either the herding people or the warrior people.

     Once a Central European Kingdom of Bohemia in the 15th c. (long after the Boii had been

     driven out by Germanic tribes) the term later came to refer to the general region of the

     Czech Republic, and in the 19th c. Bohemian took on a 2nd connotation of a community of

     artists & gypsies in reference to the society that had developed in the region of Bohemia.

     * Celtic boio = cow; [reconstructed Proto-Celtic an-bouios = not a cattle owner] & Indo-European bhei(ə)-, bhī-= hit
