HYGGE - \HEW-guh\ (n. / adj.)
- Scandinavian concept that embodies a sense of coziness, comfort, and well-being derived from enjoying
simple pleasures, like warm drinks by a fireplace, soft lighting, or quality time with loved ones.
It’s less about material things and more about creating an atmosphere of warmth, relaxation, and
contentment, especially during the cold Scandinavian winters: candlelit cafés or snug cabins - a cultural
embrace of slowing down and savoring the moment.
May be Danish = to instill courage, give comfort, joy. Alternatively from Old Norse hyggja = to think,
hugr, (later hug,) = the soul, mind, consciousness or hygga = to comfort [from hugr = mood.] Or possibly
it evolved from the homograph* hug / hugge, = to embrace.
* Same spelling but with a different meaning [homo = same + graph; from Latin graphia, Greek graphein = to write.]
