ARABIA
- or land of the Arab(s) [Arab + -ia = land of] - (formally Araby) Old French Arabi,
Latin Arabs (Arabem,) from Greek Araps (Arabos,) from Arabic (Arab)- indigenous name
of a people; possibly = inhabitant of the desert [related to Hebrew arabha = desert*]
The Victorian pejorative "city arab" = "homeless little wanderer, child of the street" was
an allusion to nomadic Bedouin; a Crusades term = one from the tribes of nomadic Arabs
[Old French bedüin, from colloquial Arabic badawin = desert-dwellers (plural of badawi;
from badw = desert / camp where the plural suffix was mistaken for part of the word.)]
The Arabian Peninsula is the largest in the world, (comparable in size to India, it includes
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates Yemen, southern Iraq among others.)
