🧭
NORTH
Old English norð, possibly from PIE 🔍 root ner = left & below; because
north is to the left when facing the rising sun* or perhaps because the
sun is at its lowest when in the north.
(Source of Sanskrit narakah = hell, & Greek neretos = deeper, lower down.)
EAST 🧭
Proto-Germanic aust = toward the sunrise from PIE root aus = to shine
(particularly in reference of the dawn)
🧭 WEST
Least changed of all directional points; being west in Old English & back to
Proto-Germanic, from PIE root wes; reduced form of wes-pero = evening, night
(Also source of Greek hesperos & Latin vesper both = evening, west)
SOUTH
Old English suþ, Proto-Germanic sunthaz, perhaps literally sun-side from
PIE root sawel = the sun.
🧭
* The same idea led to Old Irish tuath = left; northern & Arabic shamal = left hand; north
