According to legend, Grand Duke Gediminas (c. 1275–1341) was camping after a hunt in the sacred forest near where the Vilnia flows into the Neris and dreamt of a huge Iron Wolf on a hill, howling loudly. The dream was interpreted to mean the Grand Duke would build a castle & city on that site (the Iron Wolf) that would become powerful as "the capital of the Lithuanian lands... dwelling of their rulers, and the glory of their deeds shall echo throughout the world" (hence the howling.) So the Duke relocated the Lithuanian capital from Trakai to that spot ~1320, naming the city for the river by which he had dreamt.
The Lithuanian form Vilnius, began to appear in 16c & 17c, but it only became widespread during the Lithuanian national revival at the end of the 19c.

Capital and largest city🔍 of Lithuania, the region of Vilnius has been inhabited since the Stone Age, with hillforts and pre-urban habitation emerging during the Bronze Age (~8c BC) and organized settlements forming by the late 13c to early 14c.
The Baltic🔍 city has long been home to diverse communities, with Polish, Jewish, Orthodox, and German populations; it's 1st mention in letters was by Grand Duke Gediminas, inviting Jews, Germans, and displaced Templars to settle and built in that region of the then 🔎Kingdom of Lithuania.

................... Bohemian neighborhood, the Republic of Užupis, officially declares “independence” every April 1st. With only 7K residents, its own president, bishop, 4 flags, currency, a constitution, (declaring “A dog 🐈 has the right to be a dog” + "A cat 🐈 is not obliged to love its owner, but must help in time of need" e.g.) and army (of 11 people.)
FUN FACT:
The city then became the capital of the broader Grand Duchy of Lithuania from at least 1323, maintaining that status until 1795, even as it was further absorbed within the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth🔍.
When partitioned in the 18c. the city was taken by the Russian Empire, however when Lithuania later declared independence in 1918 Vilnius was not included, as it had been annexed by Poland, and it didn't rejoin it's home country, as the capitol again, until after WWII, (when all of Lithuania, once again under the Russians, secessed from the Soviet Union in 1990.)

📍 Republic of Užupis 📸 (meaning "beyond the river" or "other side of the river") - When the Soviets
left the country, artists formed the ‘Republic of Angels’ a bohemian neighborhood along the
Vilnia dotted with eccentric public art, considering themselves an independent micro-nation.
Famous for the Swing of Destiny & little bronze Mermaid under Užupis Bridge whose charms
are said to keep travelers in Užupis forever.

........................According to a legend (1st recorded in 1530) the Grand Duke Gediminas was out hunting in the region ~1320, when he had a prophetic dream about a giant Iron 🐺 Wolf howling with the voice of 100 wolves.
His pagan priest, Lizdeika, said "the [howling] iron wolf means: a capital will stand here... it's fame will spread around the world.”
So Gediminas built a castle there, birthing of the city of Vilnius. (A howling wolf can be seen atop the Vilnius Train Station.)
