† The word CHURCH is truly ancient
(God(s) & worship being one of the most basic concepts of the human condition.)
It traces back to the PIE🔍 keue = to swell, the basis for Greek kyrios = ruler, lord; evoking the idea of a swelling/ enlarging of a common human to one with status & power and then further to the ultimate swelling/ enlargement; rulership in the Gods, (which, if you are familiar with Greek mythology can all be said to be quite swollen in power and ego!)
Kyrios formed kyriake (oikia), kyriakon (doma)
= the Lord's (house) & kyriakon, = of the Lord in Greek;
used to describe houses of Christian worship as early as 3rd c. AD
Borrowed by the Goths, as Proto-Germanic kirika = church
still used in various forms throughout European language today- such as kyrka | Swedish, .....kyrkje | Norweigian, kirk | Scottish, kyrkja | Icelandic, kirke | Dutch, kirkko | Finnish &
kirche in German.
In Old English it evolved to cirice = place of Christian worship, with the hard 'kay' sound eventually softening into the 'ch' sound at the front & end of modern 'church.'
