ATLANTIC
- Latin Atlanticus, from Greek Atlantikos = of Atlas. The eponymous 🔍 ocean 🔍 was
named in reference to the Atlas Mountains on it's North African coast; named in turn
for Mount Atlas* in Mauritania, after the god:
ATLAS - [= the bearer; from tlenai = to bear (PIE 🔍 root tele = to lift / support, weight)]*
Originally an Arcadian mountain god, later incorporated into Greek mythology as a Titan
(the old gods) who must forever uphold the pillars of heaven (or earth) as punishment for
leading the war of the Titans against the Olympians (new gods.)
* Mount Atlas was important in Greek cosmology as a literal, physical support of the heavens
** Some contend the Greek derivation is a folk-etymological reshaping the Berber adrar = mountain
