Everything you need to know about Rīga before your trip, from currency to language, local festivals, time zones & safety of the water. Plus great ideas about what to see, do and eat while there!
Old Latvian Rīja, Rie, ["j" hardening to a "g" under German influence.] Origin unknown; possibly evolved from archaic Livonian ringa = a loop or bend (referencing the city's looped natural harbor) or riae a Finnic Livonian word for threshing barns / warehouses built in abundance along the banks of the Daugava as early as the 5c AD.
Alternative theories suggest it's from Latvian ridzina = stream and some suggest it's derives from Riege, the German term for a water-filled enclosure and their name for the River Rīdzene, (a former tributary of the Daugava) or from Latin rigata = irrigated, (as claimed by Bishop Albert, symbolizing he said an "irrigation of dry pagan souls by Christianity".)

.
Rīga, capital and largest city🔍 of Latvia, was founded in 1201 by Bishop Albert von Buxhoeveden, of the Teutonic Order, to serve as a base for Christianizing the local pagan Livonian tribes† of the north🔍 ; set up as the seat of the newly formed Bishopric of Livonia. The region, along the banks of the Daugava River, 1st known as Duna Urbs, had long been central to prehistoric trade routes, inhabited by Finnic tribes, the Liv's as early as the 2c AD. The waterway facilitated international commerce between the Baltic🔍 and Black Seas🔍; part of the Vikings' navigation route to Byzantium.

FUN FACT:
The city rapidly grew into a fortified trading hub, joining the Hanseatic (trade) League in 1282. Following the Livonian War, the city surrendered to Poland in 1582, integrating into the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth🔍, but due to it's economic importance was able to preserve its status as a 'free city' with considerable self-governance.
In 1621 it's prosperity made it a targeted of Sweden's aggression, and after a fierce month-long siege the city was forced to surrender, becoming the capitol of Swedish Livonia, until it was again targeted in 1710, this time by the Russian Empire🔍 in the Great Northern War, who established the city as the capital of the Russian Riga Governorate.
When Latvia proclaimed national independence in 1918, Rīga was the capital of the new republic🔍 . It was overrun by both the Nazi's in WWII and the Red Army until regaining independence from the Soviets in 1991.
