CIRCA - 1815 🇩🇪 - horizontal tricolor of black (top), red (middle) & gold (bottom) equal stripes

HISTORY: Originating with 19c liberal-nationalist flags of resistance against Napoleonic rule & the Germany, the tricolor's

black & red were derived from Lützow Free Corps uniforms, (a volunteer unit c. 1813) with yellow incorporated by University

students~1815, from the yellow/ gold field of the Holy Roman Empire's flag🔍 to evoke imperial continuity & unity. Used again

by student fraternities in the Revolution of 1848 ,(standing for constitutional governance & unity of German states) the tricolor

was adopted by the constitutional Germany (1848–1849) and later the Weimar Republic (1919-1933.)

w

Post WWII, both the FRG (West🔍 DE) & the GDR (East DE) restored the flag, (with GDR adding a

coat of arms in 1959.) In 1990, the plain tricolor became the flag of re-unified Germany.

[The state variant incorporates the Reichsadler 𖤍 eagle coat of arms ⛨ with golden shield,  centered on
the red band - .also inherited from it's former association with the Holy Roman Empire]

VEXILLOLOGY:* Evoking the historical fight for a free & united Germany, no official meanings are attached but, post-hoc;

  • The BLACK Stripe is commonly seen to denote resolve, the fertile soil or the somber past of division

  • The RED Stripe signifies blood 🩸of patriots in the struggle for independence &...

  • The   YELLOW symbolizes prosperity, enlightenment, or a hopeful future

   The design is similar to the Lithuanian flag🔍, and is nearly the Belgian flag🔍 just turned on it's side, but the resemblances were not intentional.

* The STUDY of FLAGS; their history, symbolism, usage, and design. From Latin vexillum - referring to a Roman military standard / flag (from velum= cloth/ covering/sail/curtain
[PIE🔍 root weg = to weave / to cover]) + Greek suffix -logia = study]
