PACIFIC
- Latin pacificus = peaceful, peace-making [from pax (gen. pacis) = peace + facere = to make
(PIE 🔍 root dhe = to set, put)]
From the name, Mare Pacificum c. 1519, that explorer Magellan gave to the entrance of
(what was then referred to as) the South Sea, because he found it calmer than the stormy
Atlantic🔍. The Pacificum part was later applied to the entire eponymous🔍 ocean🔍 .
