A short 40 minute bridge drive from Copenhagen, Malmö was once Denmark's 2nd largest city🔍 and home to the royal residence for a time. The medieval port town and future industrial hotspot became a center for herring fishing in the 15c before being transferred to Swedish control in the 17c. It is now filled with beautiful planned parks and cobbled stone streets that criss-cross a rectangular canal system on Sweden's South West coast.

   a bit of background...

......................The Davidshallsbron, (David hall bridge) canal crossing is lined with bronze shoe castings honoring famous Malmö art personalities. 📸 The instillation by Åsa Maria Bengtsson is called WAY TO GO. The footbridge also has a pair of talking trashcans that congratulate pedestrians when they throw away trash. 📸

FUN FACT:

I love Malmö! The waterfront and peaceful neighborhoods are so lovely and give it a real small town feel, but it has big city aspirations, it's hosted Eurovision three times, the only non-capital city to ever do so.

.................... The folk etymology for the name Malmö claims it's from 2 words: Mal Mö = ground up maiden.

Legend says a maid was ground to death at the stortorget möllestenen, (the squares's millstone) 📸. It seems unlikely,

as the town was named centuries before the millstone was placed in 1538 - possibly moved there from a monastery

but advocates claim the stone was placed in the square because of its earlier connection to the towns history.
